Caption

Radish root. Macrophotograph of the tap root of a young radish plant, Raphanus sativus. Root hairs are visible which form an intimate contact with the soil particles, and enormously increase the root's absorbing surface area. The radish is a vegetable grown for its tuberous roots which are usually eaten raw and have a pungent flavour.
