Insulin injection. Young boy injecting himself in the leg with insulin to treat his diabetes mellitus. This is a condition in which the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin, the hormone that utilises sugar in the blood. This leads to hyperglycaemia, abnormally high blood sugar levels, which can be life- threatening. With regular injections of insulin and a carefully controlled diet, however, most diabetics can live an otherwise normal life.
