Diabetes mellitus is a carbohydrate metabolism disorder that results in dangerously high levels of glucose in the blood. Regular monitoring of blood glucose is therefore neccesary. This can be undertaken using a "glucometer" machine. The patient's finger is pricked to extract a drop of blood which is then place on a chemically-coated strip and inserted into the glucometer, which gives a glucose reading. Diabetes mellitus is normally caused by insufficient insulin production by the pancreas. Treatment includes controlling dietary sugar intake, and insulin injecitons.
