Treatment of hip bursitis. Doctor injecting steroids into the hip of a 75 year old woman with trochanteric (hip) bursitis. Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions and lubricates areas where tissues, such as muscles and tendons, move over bone. It is caused by repetitive movement, trauma or prolonged and excessive pressure on the bursa. Inflammation makes normal movement painful. The steroids in this injection will reduce the inflammation.
