Roots. Macrophotograph of the roots of a Himalayan poppy (Meconopsis regia). Countless fine root hairs can be seen extending from each root. These roots serve to take up water and minerals from the soil, and the hairs vastly increase the surface area available for this task. The larger parts of the roots also stabilise the plant in the soil. Magnification: x2 at 35mm size.
