Blood glucose meter. Blood glucose test being performed by a diabetic. A drop of blood has been pricked from a finger and smeared on a test strip. The blood is analysed by the machine and the blood sugar (glucose) level is displayed on the digital screen. In this case, the reading is 6.7 millimoles per litre of blood (mmol/L), which is within the correct range of blood glucose levels. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which unused sugars (such as glucose) accumulate in the blood and urine. Monitoring of blood glucose levels allows diabetics to control the disease through diet or medication such as insulin injections.
