Blood sugar measurement being performed by a diabetic. The machine (a glucometer) analyses the blood sugar (glucose) level from a drop of blood. In this case, the reading is 5.9 millimoles per litre of blood (mmol/L). Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which unused sugars (such as glucose) accumulate in the blood and urine. Monitoring of blood glucose levels allows diabetics to control the disease through diet or medication such as insulin injections.
