Caption

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). Staff preparing NPWT equipment to use on an intensive care patient. NPWT uses a piece of sterile foam (black) attached to a vacuum pump that removes any excess blood and fluid from a wound, allowing it to heal more quickly. This piece will be used to treat a large open wound resulting from surgery. NPWT is also used for other conditions, including treating burns and on skin grafts to reduce the chances of rejection.
