Trigger finger treatment. Doctor injecting steroids into the base of a 65 year old man's finger. This is a treatment for trigger finger, a condition that occurs when the sheath around a tendon in the hand becomes irritated. The sheath swells, pinching the tendon and preventing it from moving smoothly. Eventually the sheath becomes so irritated the finger locks in position. The cause is not known, although those with diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to develop trigger finger.
