Dressing a foot ulcer. Chiropodist placing a sterile dressing on an ulcer on the foot of a 74 year old diabetic man. Ulcers are open sores on the skin. They are a common complication of diabetes, as the condition causes damage to small blood vessels and nerves. This causes poor blood flow, and even minor infections can lead to ulceration. Unless the ulcers are treated properly, they can spread and become a major infection, often requiring amputation of the affected part.
