Vitiligo treatment. Image 3 of 3. Surgeon using tools to implant a plug of healthy skin in the affected area (pink) on the face of a woman who has vitiligo. The surgeon obtained this healthy skin from behind her ear. The hope is that it will promote the growth of normal skin. This skin disorder, where the skin loses its natural pigmentation, is not well understood. It is not physically harmful, with the effects being mainly psychological and social, resulting from the patient's appearance. For this patient undergoing skin graft therapy, see images M729/051-053.
