Sunbed. Woman lying on a sunbed. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the lights cause a suntan to develop by stimulating pigment production in her skin. Sunbeds use longer wavelength UVa rays to reduce the risk of sunburn and skin cancer. The pigment produced, melanin, protects the skin from overexposure to UV radiation.
