Fluorescent light micrograph cross-section of the root of the buttercup, Ranunculus sp. root, showing the vascular bundles (yellow/green). The vascular bundle consists of the xylem, which conducts water & minerals to the plant (faintly starshaped, centre), surrounded by the phloem (yellow), which supplies sugar feom the leaves to other parts of the plant. The cells coloured red are mainly from the cortex.
