Massage. Woman undergoing a massage to her lower back. Massage consists of rubbing and kneading areas of the body; it is used to relieve painful muscle spasm, treat muscle injury, reduce oedema (fluid retention) and, in treatment of scars, to prevent tethering of skin and underlying tissue. Massage increases blood flow, reduces deep-seated pain by causing counter irritation of nerve endings in the skin, relaxes muscles and increases the suppleness of the skin.
