Massage. A woman receives a massage to her lower back. Massage involves rubbing and kneading areas of the body. It has a variety of functions, one of which is to relieve pain by counter irritation of nerve endings in the skin. Massage is also used to relieve muscle spasm, reduce oedema (build up of fluid) and prevent tethering of scar tissue. Pain in the lower back is very common in people whose work involves lifting heavy objects or sitting for prolonged periods in the same posture. It is usually caused by strain (soft tissue injury) of muscles, ligaments or tendons around the bones at the base of the spine.
