Dicotyledon root. Light micrograph of a transverse (cross) section through a root of the lime (or linden) tree, Tilia sp. This is a typical dicot root. At centre (light blue) are xylem conducting vessels arranged in annual growth rings; xylem vessels grow inwards to fill the pith, and serve to transport water from root up to the stem and leaves. External to the xylem are bands of phloem (black), which grow outwards into the root cortex which is here strengthened with collenchyma cells (red). Phloem cells conduct nutrients from the tree canopy down into the roots. With growth, the roots of Tilia become filled with conducting tissue. Magnification: x5 at 35mm size.
