Caption

Philodendron aerial root. Polarised light micrograph of a section through an aerial root of a Philodendron sp. plant. In the left-hand frame is a vascular bundle (light blue and yellow) surrounded by parenchyma cells (dark blue). It consists of xylem vessels (light blue), which transport water and nutrients around the plant, and phloem vessels (yellow), which transport carbohydrates and plant hormones. Between the outer cortex (right) and stele, the area that contains the vascular bundles, is the endodermis (orange). Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
