Reflexologist at work on a man's left foot. Reflexology (reflex zone therapy) is a method of healing that arose from the "zone theory", developed in the USA in the early 1900's, which stated that the body is divided into 10 meridians running down the body from head to toe, which pass through various organs & terminate in the toes, soles and sides of the feet. Discomfort in a particular area of the foot may be related to a malfunctioning body structure or organ & is treated by sustained, local compression-massage. Here the reflexologist is performing a wringing exercise to loosen the foot before dealing with a particular problem.
