Phototherapy. Artwork showing a woman undergoing phototherapy. This is a form of therapy based on exposure to light. The woman is sitting in a room with light shining on her, but she is imagining a calm day with the sun shining. Phototherapy can be useful in the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This is a psychological illness which causes depression and withdrawal in winter months, as daylight time decreases. By exposing the patient to a strong light source for a few hours each day, the impression of longer daylight hours can be created. The depression caused by SAD subsides naturally as spring arrives.
