Alternative medicine: woman being treated with a Hopi ear candle. Hopi ear candles are used in the treatment of various complaints including ear irritations, compacted ear wax, tinnitus, headache, migraine, sinusitis and rhinitis. The candles contain honey, flax and assorted herbs. One end of the candle is lit & the other, foil-lined end is placed in the patient's ear. The burning candle is said to provide a suction effect which alleviates pressure in the ears and sinuses, and to circulate a herbal vapour which sooths the ears and removes impurities and deposits. These candles are a traditional treat- ment used by the Hopi Indians of North America.
