Probiotic tablets. Tablets containing probiotic bacteria which are claimed to have beneficial health effects. The left jar holds Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria and the other L. salivarius. Probiotic products claim to colonise the gastro- intestinal tract with bacteria that counter the effects of pathogenic bacteria. Probiotic bacteria are claimed to help digest food, produce essential vitamins and maintain normal bowel functions; they may even improve the recovery of intestinal dis- orders and stimulate the immune system. Healthy people have many bacteria in their intestines, but their numbers may become depleted due to a poor diet or the use of antibiotics and other drugs.
