A yellow toy car under white light (bottom left) and red light (top right). Human eyes respond to the colour of light reflected from a surface. White light contains a full mix of red, green and blue. A yellow car appears yellow under white light as yellow paint absorbs blue and reflects a mix of red and green light, which appears yellow to the human eye. As red light does not contain any blue or green, the only colour the yellow car can reflect from red light is red. Therefore the car appears red under red light.
