Acupuncture. Acupuncturist's hand inserting acupu- ncture needles into a patient's back. This may be to treat backache or to tonify the internal organs. Acupuncture has been used in Eastern medicine for thousands of years. It involves placing needles into the body along energy lines known as meridians. In Western medicine, it is believed that the needles stimulate the production of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.
