Herbal medicine production. A man pours liquid into a distillation unit for the production of Indian herbal oils and preparations. Solutions of crude herbs are heated to extract the herb essence. Preparations and oils are seen in brown bottles on the floor (at lower centre). Indian traditional medicine, known as Ayurvedism, uses herbalism to treat disorders. Ayurvedism is based on empirical observation and practice, in contrast to the philosophical basis of Chinese medicine. Traditional ayurvedism used herbalism and surgical techniques as treatment, although this has largely been replaced by Western medicine. Photographed in Bombay, India.
