Garlic cloves and pills. Cloves of garlic (Allium sativum) and pill capsules containing garlic oil in a test tube. The cloves (at bottom) are the constituents of a larger bulb. Garlic is used extensively in cooking, and is an important ingredient in herbal medicine. Oil of garlic contains many important substances, including vitamins A, B and C, and small amounts of insulin. Due to the strong odour of garlic, many medicinal users prefer to take capsules of distilled garlic oil such as those seen here. The success of garlic as an insect repellent probably led to the belief that it can be used to combat vampires.
