Barberry bark (Berberis vulgaris). Barberry is used in herbal medicine for stimulating the liver and spleen, it is believed to lower fever and blood pressure. It is an important herb in Ayurvedic medicine as a liver tonic and detoxicant. It should never be given to women during pregnancy. Berberis contain an anti-bacterial alkaloid, berberine, which is used in the Far East against tropical diarrhoea.
