Toenail removal. Chiropodist's gloved hands using a syringe to inject a local anaesthetic into a 57- year-old woman's toe. The patient has an involuted toenail, a severe form of an ingrowing toenail, which requires surgical removal (avulsion). The toenail is growing abnormally and digging into the flesh of the toe (ingrowing). Excessive ingrowth has led to the involution of the nail, where the sides of the nail have curled in on themselves. Toes with ingrowing nails can become infected and sore, making it painful to walk. The condition can be caused by unsuitable footwear or incorrect cutting of the nails.
