LIBRARY Dental fillings. Coloured dental X-ray showing fillings in an upper molar tooth. This "bite-wing" X-ray of the side of the mouth shows the crowns of the upper and lower molar teeth. A tooth (at upper centre) has two dark fillings. Amalgam, a powdered alloy consisting of silver, tin, copper and zinc mixed with mercury, is usually used for back teeth fillings. Dental fillings are necessary when a tooth has become chipped or decayed due to dental caries. The dental pulp of each tooth, containing blood vessels and nerves, is coloured pink.
