Impacted wisdom teeth. Coloured X-ray of the mouth showing two impacted wisdom teeth (left). Both the upper and lower jaw are affected. The emerging wisdom teeth are pushing into the side of an adjacent molar. The two teeth to the right of each wisdom tooth are molars. Adults have four wisdom teeth (also known as third molars) - one at each ends of both rows of teeth. They erupt between the ages of 17 and 21. Impacted wisdom teeth are common, but usually cause no trouble unless they partially penetrate the gum, leaving a flap of tissue over the tooth. Treatment includes extraction if the affected area becomes infected.
