Dental abscess. Close-up of a dental abscess over a milk tooth on a child's upper jaw. A dental abscess is a pus-filled sac in the tissue around the root of a tooth. It develops when bacteria, such as staphylococci, infect the living tissue inside a decayed or broken tooth and then spread to infect the surrounding area. Treatment usually involves draining the pus from the abscess and extracting the tooth.
