Tooth fillings. Polarised light micrograph (PLM) of a longitudinal section through a tooth with various fillings. The enamel (orange) has been replaced in areas of decay (dental caries) with ceramic fillings (grainy) and a single gold filling (gold, at lower right). The mineralised dentine that forms the bulk of the tooth is red. Fillings are necessary when the hard enamel that protects the crown of the tooth is eroded by acid produced by the bacteria in plaque. Magnification: x15 at 4.5x6.5cm size.
