Caption

Dental implant. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of part of a titanium metal dental implant. Implants are used to support false teeth (dental prostheses) where teeth have died and been removed. This is the implant's base, or post, which will be surgically embedded into a hole drilled in the jawbone. The outside of the post contains cavities into which new bone may grow, which will provide a strong base for the false tooth. An attachment will then be screwed onto this post. Finally the false tooth will be cemented onto this attachment. Magnification unknown.
