Periodontal disease. Mouth of a patient suffering from periodontal disease, showing receding gums and a periodontal abscess (white, centre). This disease is caused by chemicals released by the bacteria in plaque, a substance which covers the surface of unclean teeth. It results in the erosion of the tissues that attach the teeth to the jaw. In its advanced form spaces develop between the gums and the teeth and abscesses (pus- filled, inflamed areas) may form. Poor dental hygiene is the main cause of periodontal disease.
