Dental abscess. A dental abscess is a pus-filled sac in the tissue around the root of a decaying tooth. It develops when bacteria, such as staphylococci, infect the living tissue inside a tooth and then spread to infect the surrounding area. Treatment involves draining the pus from the abscess and either filling the tooth cavity or extracting the tooth.
