Gum disease. Computer artwork of diseased gums and teeth. Gum disease causes inflammation and bleeding of the gums. It is the most common cause of tooth loss. It is caused by the build up of plaque, a film of bacteria, on the teeth and gums. Smokers are more susceptible than non-smokers to gum disease. Treatment is with the thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums.
