Caption

Amnioscopy. Artwork of a foetus in its amniotic fluid with an amnioscope being inserted through the cervix. Amniotic fluid is the clear fluid that surrounds the foetus in the uterus during pregnancy. The fluid is contained within a thin membrane (amniotic sac). Amnioscopy is an obstetric procedure in which an amnioscope (held in hand) is inserted through the vagina (wide) and cervix (narrow). The amnioscope is a viewing tube (endoscope) that allows the amniotic fluid and the foetus to be inspected while the amniotic sac remains intact.
