Amniocentesis. Obstetrician performing an amniocentesis test on a 14 week pregnant woman. A needle has being inserted through the woman's abdomen into the amniotic sac, which surrounds the foetus and a sample of the amniotic fluid is being extracted. An ultrasound transducer (lower right) is used to determine the best location for extraction. The cells extracted in the fluid will be screened for genetic or chromosomal disorders, such as Down's syndrome.
