In vitro fertilisation (IVF): scientist placing test tube containing human sperm and ova (eggs) into an incubator where fertilisation may potentially occur. Fertility drugs given to potential mothers stimulate superovulation - the production of several ova rather than the usual one. One method of harvesting ova is by laparoscopy, a surgical procedure using optical fibres linked to a collecting needle that is inserted through the abdominal wall. In successful cases, embryos are transferred back to the woman's uterus via a catheter through the cervix.
