Artificial insemination (image 1 of 9). Young couple in a counselling session with a doctor about the woman's impending artificial insemination. This process is used when the couple cannot conceive naturally. The man's sperm is artificially introduced into the woman's cervix. When the sperm of the woman's life partner is used, it is known as AIH (artificial insemination using husband's sperm). The doctor will explain the risks and chances of conception to the couple, and allow them to decide whether or not to continue with the treatment. Photographed at a clinic in Milan, Italy. For a sequence showing stages in the process, see images M802/154-162.
