IVF treatment. Technician injecting human sperm into a human egg cell (ovum) during in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The ovum is seen magnified on the screen (centre left), and is held in position by a pipette end (to its left) while a spermatozoon (sperm cell) is injected into it through the microneedle to its right. This technique is known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). IVF is performed when a couple want children but cannot conceive naturally. Usually several fertilised eggs are implanted in the woman's uterine lining to improve the chances of success.
