In vitro fertilization. Surgeon implanting embryos into a woman's uterus during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. The embryos, known as blastocysts, are at an early stage in their development. They were created by the micro- injection of sperm into eggs surgically removed from the woman's ovaries. The resulting fertilized eggs (zygotes) were allowed to develop into blastocysts in the laboratory. Following implantation, pregnancy proceeds as normal. IVF treatment enables couples with a range of infertility problems to conceive.
