Egg harvesting. Surgeon using a laparoscope inserted through the abdominal wall to harvest a woman's ova (eggs) for in vitro fertilization (IVF). A laparoscope uses fibre optics linked to a video camera to allow the surgeon to see the ovaries. The woman will have been given fertility drugs to stimulate the production of several ova, rather than the usual one. These are then removed through a tube in the laparoscope and fertilized in a petri dish, using a fresh or frozen sample of sperm. If fertilization is successful, embryos are transferred back into the woman's uterus via a catheter inserted through the cervix.
