Scanning electron micrograph of a horizontal section through a sample of balsa wood, the wood (secondary xylem) of the tree Ochroma lagopus. Each of these air-filled chambers is a cell known as a fibre. They are strong sclerenchyma cells with thickened walls which support and strengthen the tree. Magnification: x1000 at 8x10" size.
