IVF embryos. Scientist holding a petri dish containing embryos created by in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The embryos are created by injecting human ova (eggs) with sperm to fertilise them. The resultant zygotes are grown in the lab until they reach an early stage of embryonic development. They can then be implanted into a patient's uterus. Photographed at the Marques Institute, Barcelona, Spain. The Institute is the first in Europe to offer embryo adoption, where the embryos implanted into a woman's uterus are not biologically linked to her or her partner.
