Pregnant woman. Thermogram of the profile of a standing woman at full term pregnancy. Thermo- graphy is a technique for visualising skin and body temperatures. Colours represent different temperatures: from blue and black (coolest) to red and white (warmest). Long-wavelength infrared radiation is emitted by the skin in proportion to skin temperature. This heat radiation is detected electronically by the thermographic camera, and processed to give an image such as this. Skin temperature may reflect the volume of blood supply across parts of the body, and can highlight a variety of circulatory dysfunctions.
