Pregnant woman at eight and a half months holding an ultrasound scan of her unborn child next to her swollen abdomen. Images of a foetus can be produced using ultrasound. High frequency sounds are passed through the abdomen using a transducer. The echoes are recorded to build up a picture of the foetus. It is a useful technique for monitoring the health and growth of a foetus and can be used for gender determination.
