Light micrograph of tissue from a clove of garlic, Allium sativum, showing numerous crystals of calcium oxalate (black-edged rectangles) embedded in the cell cytoplasm. Calcium oxalate crystals are common in the leaves and stems of many plants. They have no known function other than as a means of disposal of excess calcium. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
