Xylem. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through xylem vessels in an unidentified stem. Xylem tissue is responsible for the upward transport of water and solutes in the plant, from the roots into the stem and leaves. As seen here (at centre) these elongated vessels may be reinforced and strengthened with spiral bands. Spiral bands allow the xylem vessels to elongate and grow lengthwise. In mature woody plants, xylem makes up the bulk of vascular tissue in the stems and branches. Magnification: x125 at 35mm size.
