Blood sampling. A midwife uses a syringe to take a blood sample from the arm of a pregnant woman. The strap around the woman's upper arm is a tourniquet. This restricts blood flow out of the arm, making veins stand up so that they are easier to puncture. Blood samples are subjected to a battery of tests in modern hospitals, helping to confirm diagnoses or identify disorders.
