Foetal heartbeat examination. Midwife checking the heartbeat of a woman's foetus during a routine antenatal visit. The midwife is using a foetal stethoscope known as a Pinard. She is counting the number of heartbeats per minute. This will enable her to judge whether the foetus is developing normally. Antenatal check-ups are carried out throughout pregnancy to check the health of the mother and her child, and to allow the mother to discuss various aspects of pregnancy and childbirth.
